October’s Theme: Community and Giving Back

Giving back to local causes, supporting our neighbours experiencing homelessness, and walking together this winter.

“

Strong communities aren’t built solely by homes and infrastructure; they are built by the people who dedicate their time to lifting others up. Whether you are looking to spend a few hours sorting donations, serving meals, or walking alongside neighbours in need, Ottawa offers incredible grassroots organizations that need hands-on help right now. In this post, we explore active local volunteer opportunities and share an exciting update on how you can join our team this winter for the Coldest Night of the Year walk and shelter tour.

How to Volunteer in Ottawa: Causes That Need Your Support Right Now

Finding the right community to call home goes beyond floor plans, square footage, and school zones. It’s about connection. Ottawa is filled with diverse, vibrant neighbourhoods, but like any growing city, many of our neighbours face real challenges—from food insecurity to housing distress.

If you have been looking for actionable ways to give back, you don’t have to look far. There are dozens of incredible grassroots non-profits actively looking for helping hands.

Whether you have an hour a week or want to get involved in a seasonal team event, here is a guide on how to volunteer in Ottawa, featuring active local causes and an invitation to join us for a very special upcoming charity event.

Active Volunteer Opportunities Across Ottawa

If you’re ready to roll up your sleeves, several local organizations are looking for individuals, families, and local groups to assist with essential daily operations:

  • Food Security and Food Banks: Organizations like the Ottawa Food Bank rely on volunteers to help sort food drives, assist at farm harvests, and support distribution networks throughout the city. Local community pantries in neighbourhoods like Orleans, Centretown, and Kanata also frequently seek shift support.

  • Support for Individuals Experiencing Homelessness: Emergency shelters like The Ottawa Mission accept volunteers for kitchen shifts, clothing room sorting, housekeeping, and administrative help.

  • Neighbourhood Clearinghouses: If you aren’t sure where your specific skills fit best, platforms hosted by Volunteer Ottawa allow you to filter opportunities by interest, neighbourhood, and time commitment.

  • Youth and Senior Programs: Local community resource centres in East Ottawa, Nepean, and Western Ottawa regularly seek drivers, youth mentors, and friendly visitors to support local seniors.

Finding a cause that aligns with your personal values makes giving back a natural and rewarding part of your routine.

Looking Ahead: Prepping for Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY)

One cause that remains particularly close to our hearts is supporting local emergency shelters and organizations serving individuals experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness. Winter in Ottawa is beautiful, but it can also be exceptionally harsh for those living without stable shelter.

That’s why our team is getting ready to participate in the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) walk.

CNOY is a family-friendly, Canada-wide fundraising walk that takes place during the coldest month of winter to raise critical funds and awareness for local shelter partners, such as The Ottawa Mission and Ottawa Innercity Ministries. Walking in the cold gives participants a tiny glimpse of the challenges faced by homeless community members every day while raising funds that keep shelter doors open, meals hot, and support services running.

Join Our Team: Walk With Us & Take the Shelter Tour

We believe that putting people first extends far beyond real estate transactions. We want to make a tangible difference in our city, and we’d love for you to be a part of it!

We are cordially inviting our clients, friends, neighbours, and community members to join our official team for the Coldest Night of the Year walk.

Here is what we have planned:

  1. Walk With Us: Join our team for a scenic, family-friendly 2km or 5km walk through downtown Ottawa. It’s a fantastic opportunity to bundle up, move together, and raise crucial funds.

  2. Guided Shelter Tour: Prior to the walk, our team will be hosting a guided tour of a local shelter facility. This tour provides an eye-opening, respectful look at the incredible daily work being done behind the scenes—from meal preparation and emergency housing to addiction services and skills training.

  3. Post-Walk Warm-Up: After finishing the course, we’ll gather for warm drinks, hot soup, and great conversation to celebrate our collective impact.

Whether you want to sign up as an official walker on our team, donate to the cause, or simply join us for the shelter tour to learn more, we would be thrilled to have you alongside us.

Tips for Getting Started as a Local Volunteer

If you’re ready to start volunteering in Ottawa today, here are a few simple tips to keep in mind:

  • Start Small: You don’t need to commit to 20 hours a month right away. One shift every couple of weeks can make a huge difference to a small non-profit.

  • Get Your High School Hours: If you have teens at home, many local food banks and shelters happily verify community service hours required for graduation.

  • Involve Your Family or Workplace: Group volunteering is a great way to bond while making a collective impact.

  • Reach Out Early for Winter Events: Winter charity drives and events fill up quickly! Registering early ensures organizers can plan resources effectively.

How Our Team Can Help You Get Involved

Our commitment to Ottawa is grounded in an authentic, people-first approach. We live, work, and raise our families here, and supporting the fabric of our local neighbourhoods is essential to everything we do.
