NCC Trails & Food Trucks:
The Quirky community of Bells Corners
In my debut blog post, I’m exploring why Bells Corners is and will always be one of the most compelling places to live in Ottawa, from its sprawling NCC trail systems to the local eats that give the community its unique character.
If you have been scouring Ottawa’s real estate market for that elusive “perfect balance”—a home that offers both size and value—you might be looking in the wrong places. While buyers often flock to the brand-new developments in the far suburbs or the high-priced premiums of the downtown core, one neighbourhood consistently flies under the radar.
Bells Corners is that rare community that bridges the gap between urban convenience and suburban space. Whether you are a first-time homebuyer looking to plant roots without breaking the bank or right-sizing with a manageable lifestyle in a friendly pocket of the city, this neighbourhood deserves a spot on your shortlist.
The Appeal: More Than Just a Location
When we talk about Bells Corners, we are talking about value. Many of the homes here—predominantly bungalows and sturdy family homes—were built between the 1950s and and into the late 1980s. This era of construction is a secret weapon for savvy buyers. Unlike the compact footprints of some modern builds, 70s-era homes in Bells Corners offer spacious bedrooms, generous living areas, and, perhaps most importantly, sizable lots.
In the current era where “backyard” has become synonymous with “tiny patio,” the expansive yards found here in this corner of the K2H are a breath of fresh air. They are perfect for pet owners who need room for their dogs to roam or gardeners looking to cultivate a personal oasis.
The Great Outdoors at Your Doorstep
If you are someone who craves nature but needs to be within reach of the city, Bells Corners is a dream. Nearly every street leads you toward an NCC trail, a lush park, or a dedicated community gathering place.
For the outdoor enthusiast, the neighbourhood is an absolute hub. We have an abundance of NCC trail entrances that can whisk you away to Kanata, Carling North or even as far as Kingston if you are feeling committed. Personally, I use these trails several times a week throughout the year/ Whether I’m out with my dogs for a morning walk or biking to see my best friends in Kanata, it is the best 28 minutes of my day—wind in my hair and the city’s noise left behind.
And for the dog lovers? You have two dedicated dog parks in Westcliffe Estates, plus you are just minutes away from the legendary Bruce Pit. It is a dog-walker’s paradise.
Life in the Neighbourhood: Local Eats and Hangouts
A community is only as strong as its gathering spots, and Bells Corners has a distinct, unpretentious vibe that we love. It isn’t about flashy, high-end fine dining; it is about the places that make you feel at home.
- Pub & Community Vibes: For a bit of fun, the karaoke nights at East Side Mario’s or a casual evening at Mort’s Pub are local staples.
- The Go-To Lunch: If you haven’t grabbed a sandwich at Duke’s Deli, you’re missing out on a local classic.
- For the Treats: A trip to Suzy Q for donuts is the ultimate weekend indulgence, and Whiprsnapr Brewing Co. is the perfect spot for trivia nights, fresh pizza, and a friendly atmosphere.
- Food Truck Culture: The local food truck scene is vibrant and delicious. Whether you’re craving a classic at Smash Daddy, the bold flavours of Fat Sisters Falafel and Mexicana Cabana, or a classic serving from the traditional French Fry trucks, you’re never short on options.
The list sincerely…goes on.
Where Can We Do Better? (The Real Talk)
As your real estate advisors, we believe in full transparency. No neighbourhood is perfect, and Bells Corners does have some growing pains.
- The Cycling Challenge: While the recreational trails are fantastic, the infrastructure for everyday commuting needs work. Currently, trying to bike to Carling Avenue often requires a scenic 30-minute detour or a b-line down Moodie next to racing cars going over 80km/hr. The neighbourhood is fundamentally bikeable, but we need more dedicated bike lanes to connect residents safely to Crystal Beach, Andrew Hayden Park, and beyond… or simply those heading to the DND Campus or Kanata North’s Tech Park.
- Transit Limitations: Like much of the city, transit is a work in progress. While the neighbourhood is functional, we look forward to the Moodie Station LRT expansion, which will be a game-changer for accessibility. Improving transit options is vital to keeping this area vibrant and accessible!
- Infrastructure Challenges: Over the past winter, we dealt with three water main breaks; two of which affected local businesses with the third just around the corner from my home. We were only out of water for a short period and didn’t mind heading out for local Thai food. It’s a reality that comes with living in a 50+ year-old community
- Additionally, our hydro grid can be sensitive. When high winds or strong storms roll through, certain pockets of Bells Corners lose power, and sometimes for longer than we’d like. Thankfully, this only occurs once or twice a summer season.
The “Expert Peer” Take: These aren’t reasons to avoid the area, but they are reasons to be a “prepared homeowner.” Consider backup power options or the benefits of simply being part of a community that looks out for each other. Every neighbourhood has its quirks; in Bells Corners, we trade the occasional power outage for the best trails and biggest backyards in the west end.
